Where better than Berkeley to talk about Burning Man? Larry Harvey is a founder of the notorious counterculture festival, which started on a San Francisco beach before migrating to a desert in Nevada. All the while, his brother Stewart Harvey watched Burning Man evolve from behind a camera. Stewart's new book, Playa Fire: Spirit and Soul at Burning Man, is the culmination of more than 30 years of giant art pieces, spiritual journeys, and hallucinatory experiences. The highlight is a mix of black-and-white and color photographs — more than 100 in all — that capture the strange, whimsical beauty of Black Rock City. With never-before-seen memorabilia and a full-blown narrative, Playa Fire aims to be the best representation of the Burning Man experience. A futile exercise? Perhaps, but there isn't a more qualified person to try.
