Stephanie Crawford

When: Fri., May 29, 8 p.m. 2009

Mix a little Betty Carter with a little Carmen McCrae and you get EastBay jazz vocalist Stephanie Crawford, the 1993 winner of France's Django d'Or award. Crawford had an illustrious career in New York prior to her six-year sojourn in Paris (she had professorships at Centre d'Informations Musicales and Institute d'Art, Culture et Perception from 1989-96). She's known for phrasing lyrics in such a sincere, unadulterated way that every song becomes her own story. Moreover, Crawford's voice is simply wonderful: sweet, pliant, and just little sad, recalling balladeers of the bebop era. She doesn't so much interpret music as inhabit it. Stephanie Crawford performs on Friday, May 29, at Berkeley's Jazzschool (2087 Addison St.; 8 p.m., $15), and Sunday, May 31, at Nomad Cafe (6500 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley; 11 a.m.-1 p.m., free).
