It's not a bad idea: The Ring with a killer videogame instead of a videotape. The game is passed around as a bootleg, makes mysterious puddles of water appear, and contains a nasty female spirit who'll kill you just as soon as you die in the game. Fortunately for her, everyone in the movie is a terrible gamer incapable of beating the thing, or even hacking in a cheat code (it is a PC game, after all). And the evil spirit is Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Maria Kalinina), infamous in real life for inspiring vampire legends in Eastern Europe, but here inexplicably relocated to New Orleans. Among the potential victims, the standouts are Jimmi Simpson (Herbie: Fully Loaded), as the token insensitive asshole, and Adam Goldberg, seemingly impersonating Paul Giamatti. Stay Alive fully illustrates the hazards of patterning movies on games: The fictional game depicted here is way cooler than anything else in the actual movie.
