Following a noon rally at UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza, 500 to 1000 protesters marched from campus down Telegraph Avenue to Frank Ogawa Plaza, Oakland police estimated.
In Oakland, UC Berkeley students were met by students from the city’s community colleges, high schools, and elementary schools. Estimates put the crowd was well over 1,500.
The rally was opened by Marika Goodrich, a student-activist who was arrested during the riot that erupted after a dance party in support of the protests last Thursday. Goodrich was followed by a performance by a member of the Cal Slam team, and speeches from a librarian from Berkeley’s African American Studies Library and a student-teacher in Oakland public schools, among many others.
The rally culminated in calls for demonstrators to move on to San Francisco’s City Center, where protests will continue into the evening.
