.State Attorneys: Schwarzenegger Broke the Law

The state Legislative Counsel has concluded that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger violated California law when he made $489 million in last-minute cuts to the budget, according to the Chron. The cuts included slashing an additional $6.2 million from state parks – a move that could lead to the closure of up to 100 parks or force the state to find corporate sponsors for them. The state Legislative Counsel concluded that the governor “exceeded his line-item veto authority” when making the cuts. However, Democratic leaders, who reacted angrily to the governor’s actions and asked for the legal opinion, do not plan to sue to overturn what Schwarzenegger did. At most, they may help groups affected by the cuts if they file suit.
