Rock & Pop

When: Wed., Jan. 4, 9 p.m. 2012

Popping on headphones and listening to the first track off Starfucker'sReptilians for the first time since it came out in April, it occurred to me: This band hits the same nerve as Flaming Lips circa Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. It satisfies that itch for alternative-sounding pop music that manages to be playful without sounding trite. It's a desire that was strong in 2002 and remains so ten years later. In the years between, we've had acts like MGMT, among others, to keep the momentum going, but none quite compare to Starfucker, a band that holds its own. Starfucker has a sound that's cool, doesn't try too hard, and is still fun to dance to. If you check the group out this week -- and it's well worth checking out -- be sure to request its famously crowd-pleasing cover of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." What's more, local up-and-comers and SF/East Bay commuters Painted Palms will open. It's the double bill's first of three Bay Area dates this week. At The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Wednesday, Jan. 4. 9 p.m., $23.
