Stand Tall Pt. III

When: Sept. 22-Oct. 22 2012

Now in its third run, Old Crow's annualStand Tallgroup show could not get much bigger without spilling into the space's tattoo parlor. This year, 38 artists received 30 partitioned spaces in which to complete site-specific works. For this, the gallery constructed a temporary wall through the center of the gallery, effectively doubling exhibition space to accommodate a staggering display of local and international street art. Styles vary from decorative paneling to ultra-detailed illustration to shrine-like mixed media assemblage. The site-specific submission format yields its share of misses, like the demonic badger sculpture by Joe Kowalczyk, as well as hits, as with Truong Tran's installation of backlit chambers holding a curious array of biblically symbolic objects, soft-core porn cutouts, and antiquated recording equipment. Such is the nature of a group show this jam-packed, and this one is worth seeing. Stand Tall Pt. III runs through October 22 at Old Crow Tattoo & Gallery (362 Grand Ave., Oakland). 510-834-2769 or
