Spring Breakers

Rated R 94 minutes 2013

A quartet of naïve coeds from a provincial college somewhere — played by Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine — rob a fast-food restaurant to finance their spring vacation on a Florida beach, but when they fall in with a dope-dealing gangsta (James Franco) they learn the true meaning of wild. So is writer-director Harmony Korine (Trash Humpers, Gummo) telling a cautionary tale or just trying to shock the squares? Why not both? Franco, almost unrecognizable beneath cornrows and grille, sets new heights for himself with the role of Alien, and the girls certainly prance around a lot in their bikinis. But the scenario is too slow, padded out by repeated dialogue and dumb “lyrical interludes” to camouflage the lack of plot. Not even the cinematography by Benoît Debie (Enter the Void) or Cliff Martinez and Skrillex’ music can give it much of a hipster sheen. May set a new record for number of producers, at twenty. (94 min.)
