Speaking Fierce

When: Thu., March 6, 7-9 p.m. 2008

Willowy chanteuses and lurid balladeers may reign supreme among female pop vocalists, but the Speaking Fierce showcase will favor women with a little more backbone and against-the-grain approach. Starring soul singer Jennifer Johns, hip-hop activist duo Climbing PoeTree, and Pakistani spoken-word poet BushraRehman, this event will intersperse tales of scrappy Desi girls in Brooklyn with catchy, polyglot homages to the "ghetto international." Sponsored by the Women of Color Resource Center, Speaking Fierce takes place Thursday, March 6 at First Congregational Churchof Oakland (2501 Harrison St.), in time for International Women's Day on March 8. 7 p.m. $10-$25 donation.
