Gospel & Vocal, Holiday Music, Jazz, Lounge, & Cabaret, Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop, World, Latin, & Reggae

When: Wed., Dec. 5, 8 & 10 p.m. and Mon., Dec. 15, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

Oakland a cappella quintet SoVoSótakes the idea of barbershop harmony (five-part chords sung by a lead, two tenors, and two baritones) and makes it hip. The four-part harmonies become jazzier sus chords (i.e., the sound that characterized Janet Jackson's entire Control album); and the bass incorporates beatboxer grunts, and gulps -- maybe a son clave rhythm. Moreover, the old holiday standards get a makeover, à la SoVoSó's "Christmas in Questa," which references Sangre de Cristo and empanadas. SoVoSó performs its annual holiday show Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Yoshi's, with a lineup that also features Linda Tilllery, pc muñoz, Young Performers International, ArtsFirst Oakland Circlesingers Choir, and Oakland Youth Chorus. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., $10-$16.
