When: Thu., April 12, 8 p.m. 2018
Oakland’s own Boots Riley will bring his debut feature film, Sorry to Bother You, home to the Grand Lake Theatre on Thursday. Lucky Oaklanders will be able to catch a pre-release screening of the surrealist social satire about race, capitalism, and greed as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival. Set in an alternate-reality present-day Oakland and starring Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out, Atlanta) as a telemarketer who uses one weird trick (read: his white voice) to propel himself to success, this deeply original satire was the breakout hit of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Advance tickets have sold out, but the festival will release more on the day of the screening. Stop by the theater box office at noon or get in line early to snag one of these $25 golden tickets, or you’ll have to wait until July to catch this hit. A Q&A with Riley and actors Terry Crews and Jermaine Fowler will follow the screening.
