Song to Song

Rated R 129 minutes 2017

One-time genius filmmaker Terrence Malick rolls out yet another ultra-personal tone poem about how hard it is to sustain personal relationships in this frantic modern world. Following the guidelines he used for To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, the writer-director limns the interwoven stories of four characters attending the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Malick’s trademark stylistic tics – very little dialogue, even less dramatic exposition, endless establishing shots, overused voiceover narration, etc. – only emphasize the unsatisfying slimness of the drama. So we’re forced to watch Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman canoodling for 129 long, long minutes. Malick’s best films – Badlands, Days of Heaven, The New World – seem about a million years away. Not even Patti Smith or Iggy Pop, seen in vignettes, can help (2017, rated R) (K.V.)
