Something in the Air

Rated NR 122 minutes 2013

On the heels of his Carlos and Summer Hours, writer-director Olivier Assayas spins yet another tale of the Baby Boom generation – this time a pastiche portrait of French student revolutionaries sorting themselves out in the years after the May 1968 general strike (the film’s French title is Après Mai, or "after May"), and one character in particular, a middle-class art student named Gilles (Clément Métayer). Gilles and his girlfriends Christine (Lola Créton) and Laure (Carole Combes) are so attractive and determined, we’re encouraged to not question their decisions to take lazy vacation breaks in Italy and dabble in drugs — and that’s part of Assayas’ point. Are they dilettantes? Perhaps, but in the long run the only thing that matters is that you were there. Thanks to this intoxicating film, we can pretend we were. (121 min.)
