Something Borrowed

Rated PG-13 112 minutes 2011

A genial cast and moderately funny script prevail over the sort of sappy music cues and white-bread settings that have become the grating norm in Hollywood rom-coms. Adapted from the chick-lit best seller by Emily Giffin, this centers on a sweet and deferential Manhattan attorney (Ginnifer Goodwin) who stumbles into a passionate affair with the handsome, wealthy fiancé (Colin Egglesfield) of her alpha-female buddy (Kate Hudson). Keeping this liaison under wraps generates quite a few laughs as the pushy bride-to-be hosts a series of weekend getaways at the Hamptons, though director Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) drags out the deception so long that you may be checking your watch by the time he arrives at his unexpectedly bittersweet resolution. With John Krasinski. (110 min.)
