One out of every three children in the United States is overweight, but solving the obesity epidemic may be as simple as child's play — for an hour a day, to be exact. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" website, just 60 minutes of active play every day can keep kids fit. And America SCORES, a self-proclaimed "soccer league with a purpose" that runs an after-school program in several Oakland schools, received a shout-out in a White House report earlier this month on ending childhood obesity.
America SCORES runs its after-school soccer program combining soccer and poetry in fourteen cities nationally, including in Oakland, San Francisco, and West Contra Costa County. A recent UC San Francisco report cited by the White House concluded that the Bay Area students who played soccer in the after-school program lost body fat and gained self-confidence.
