Snow White and the Huntsman

Rated PG-13 127 minutes 2012

Live-action rehab of the classic fairy tale produced by the same company who made Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The comparison ends there. Neither Snow White (Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame) nor her nemesis the Evil Queen Ravenna (hammy Charlize Theron) adds much to the legend. It’s not so much that the transition from a child’s point of view to that of an adolescent makes the new version more trivial, but in trying to cram the story into another framework, most of its original charm goes missing. This tired exercise borrows freely from Lord of the Rings, Princess Mononoke, and Luc Besson’s The Messenger, in addition to the Twilight movies, and never manages much of a spark of personality from Stewart and Theron’s loud, empty performances. It’s poison-apple filmmaking. Screenplay by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock, and Hossein Amini, directed by CGI-happy first-timer Rupert Sanders. Also with Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin as Snow White’s two suitors. (127 min.)
