Smuin Ballet

When: Fri., May 18, 8 p.m. and Sat., May 19, 2 & 8 p.m. 2012

Moving in a new contemporary direction, Smuin Ballet brings its dynamic spring program to the Lesher Center for the Arts (1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek) on Friday and Saturday, May 18-19. The highlight is Swipe, an exhilarating ballet created by San Francisco Ballet resident choreographer Val Caniparoli and danced to a heavily sampled electronic score by Gabriel Prokofiev. Swipe shows what the company's superb and sublimely fit dancers can do, pushing them to heights of technical excellence and bringing out the irresistible joie de vivre of fully engaged dancers. Also on the bill is Through, a high-energy contemporary ballet by Ma Cong that received its world premiere this season, plus Michael Smuin's serene classical work Symphony of Psalms, set to Stravinsky's 1930 choral piece of the same name. Fri. 8 p.m., Sat. 2 p.m and 8 p.m.; $49-$62. 925-943-7469 or
