Smuin Ballet

When: Fri., May 21, 8 p.m. and Sat., May 22, 2 & 8 p.m. 2010

Leaping into the future while honoring its legacy, theSmuin Ballet breaks ground with a spring program that includes JiríKylián'sPetite Mort -- in a notable coup, Smuin is the first Bay Area company, and one of the few worldwide, chosen to perform this sensuous contemporary piece for six men, six women, a half-dozen fencing foils, and two Mozart piano concertos. Rounding out the triple bill are the world premiere of French Twist, a manic, madcap contemporary piece by up-and-coming choreographer Ma Cong; and Songs of Mahler, a playful, passionate, and technically demanding ballet created by the company's late founder, Michael Smuin. The company performs at Lesher Center for the Arts (1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek) on Friday (8 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m. and 8 p.m.), May 21 and 22. $41-$56. 925-943-7469 or
