If you’ve ever been to the Oakland Metro Operahouse, you might have said to yourself, “Someone should throw a barbecue in here.” OK, probably not, but someone did, and you should check it out. There will be food, craft beer, cool T-shirts, and stand-up comedy. But let’s not forget the most important part of this barbecue: live hip-hop. There are talented names from all across the board here: Los Angeles artsy, alternative rapper and Living Legends crew member Murs; New York City political hip-hop duo Dead Prez, who’s song “I’m a African” became a pan-African anthem for the hip-hop generation; young rapper A-F-R-O, whose witty wordplay has turned some heads; and headliner Immortal Technique, a Brooklyn rapper whose history in battle rap gave him the skills to deliver a no-holds-barred style of revolutionary political lyrics.
