Slouching Towards Disneyland

When: Fri., Dec. 28, 8 p.m. 2007

Apt to draw absurd connections between contemporary Hollywood and imperial Rome, social commentator Ian Shoales (aka Merle Kessler) is a regular intertextuality fiend. His new show Slouching Towards Disneyland-- which recently enjoyed a month-long run at San Francisco's Marsh Theater -- careens in every possible direction, using the Big Bang and the history of the world as its point of departure (other topics include Plato, the Virgin Mary, Fox News, the war in Iraq, text-messaging, blackface, amusement parks, the blogosphere, and God). Featuring witty rejoinders and musical accompaniment by local humorist Joshua (Raoul) Brody, Slouching Towards Disneyland is smart-alecky and diffuse, and never quite devolves into post-modernist wankery. It plays at Rhythmix Cultural Works this Friday, Dec. 28, at 8 p.m. $15-$20. Rhythmix.org
