Slap Hitter: A's Prospect finds Higher Calling

What tops an A?

God, for one. Oakland A's prospect Grant Desme chose a different path than his Single A stats suggested as he made the announcement today, that he is leaving baseball for the priesthood. Please no jokes about trading Desme to the Padres.

Desme was one of those names that always shows up as a guy outplaying his draft level, the comments always discount his gaudy stats and conclude that really he isn't as good as they're made out to be. That sort of relentless lesson in forced humility might hold the young man in good stead in his next profession.

But selfishly now, as an A's fan, my G-d! I've just gotten used to the Green and Gold losing talent to the Yankees, Braves and the big guys, but now we're losing players to the Big Guy himself. Hellfire!

General manager Billy Beane said all the right things; "we respect his decision", "we wish him all the best". What else could he say? But what he could do? Did Billy sell the team's soul in overachieving all those years? Perhaps an exorcism is in order. I think I know where we can find the priest.
