Skyline 50K

When: Sun., Aug. 7, 7 a.m. 2011

Marathons? Been there, done that. What you need is something a tad more challenging — like the Skyline 50K Endurance Run on Sunday, Aug. 7. As ultramarathons go, it's actually on the short side: 31 miles, or 4.8 miles longer than a standard marathon. The scenic, moderately hilly course wends its way through a series of East Bay Regional Parks from the Lake Chabot Marina (17600 Lake Chabot Rd., Castro Valley) to Redwood's Skyline Gate, returning along the Skyline National Recreation Trail. There's plenty of single-track and ridgeline running to go around, so the path is likely to be at least as nice as the destination, where chef Phil Brown will roast a pig in a wheelbarrow. 7 a.m., race-day registration at 5:45 a.m.; $75-$100.

Price: $65-$75
