Sky Ferreira and How To Dress Well

When: Tue., April 9, 8 p.m. 2013

If you're looking for an endorsement of R&B artist How to Dress Well (aka singer-songwriter Tom Krell), try this YouTube comment: "Saw him last night in Hong Kong and he absolutely blew my ovaries to smithereens." While such sentiments aren't uncommon when it comes to today's most innovative R&B singers (Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Miguel), obsessing over the music's sensuality distracts from what makes Krell so special. Many of his songs -- which, while beholden to a sense of soulfulness -- feel more elliptical and atmospheric, often with swelling strings and spacey structures. He's also darker and more emotive than his peers, while being entirely capable of delivering a pop song in the vein of Nineties R&B (for example, the shuffling, fingersnap-heavy, multi-tracked falsetto-filled "& It Was U"). Perhaps Krell will bring some stage banter about 18th-century philosopher Immanuel Kant, who he has extensively studied as a Ph.D candidate, when he plays Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco) on Tuesday, Apr. 9, with Sky Ferreira and High Highs. 8 p.m., $12, $14.
