Silent House

Rated R 88 minutes 2012

An already distraught young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) is trapped inside an old dark house without electric power, and her predicament is shown in real time, in one continuous camera take. After awhile we don’t notice the gimmick any more, and so we’re stuck with writer/co-director Laura Lau’s slender but arguably effective set of reaction riffs (based on the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda) and actress Olsen’s hysterics, which get old in a hurry. Here’s a three-word review in film titles for horror/thriller fans with a memory: Blair Witch Repulsion. One or two good moments. Literally. Co-directed by Chris Kentis and costarring Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, and Julia Taylor Ross. (88 min.)
