Rated R 98 minutes 2013

A four-character social-problem melodrama about addiction to prescription medications and the dire implications of it, by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. It might have implied more, but the story of a mixed-up urban dweller (Rooney Mara), her corporate ex-con husband (Channing Tatum), her two most recent psychiatrists (Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones), and a new miracle antidepressant called Ablixa takes an expedient plot shortcut in the second act – otherwise there’s enough here for a mini-series. We had high expectations for a marriage between director Soderbergh’s devotion to genre forms and his ongoing moral critique of America, but we’ll have to settle instead for an acting display by four of the sharpest personalities in the movie biz. The screenplay is by Scott Z. Burns, who wrote Contagion for Soderbergh (105 min.)
