Rock & Pop, All Ages

When: Sat., March 6, 9 p.m. 2010

Every genre has its "supergroup," and in metal, it's Shrinebuilder. Featuring Wino of Saint Vitus, the Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and the Hidden Hand; Scott Kelly of Neurosis; Al Cisneros of Om and Sleep; and Dale Crover of the Melvins; the foursome released its self-titled debut album last year, five songs of down-tuned, doomy, fuzz-heavy riffs interspersed with some nuanced atmospheric elements. It's a cohesive, multilayered, crushingly heavy effort that rewards with repeated listens. And considering that a lot of bands shoot for "true" metal status these days, Shrinebuilder's old-school aesthetic is entirely authentic. Any fan of psychedelic, stoner doom rock will consider this a must-see show of the year. At Oakland Metro (630 3rd St., Oakland) on Saturday, Mar. 6, with Harvestman, A Storm of Light, and Laudanum. 9 p.m., $18.
