Hey, look who's back! Shirley Dean, who sat on the Berkeley City Council for fifteen years and led what was once called the city's "moderate" faction during two terms as mayor, has to decided to run for mayor once again! According to the Berkeley Daily Planet, Dean took out papers to run for mayor earlier this week. Incumbent mayor Tom Bates is expected to run for one more term; he and Dean clashed six years ago, when he unseated her and took her place as mayor. Dean told the Daily Planet that this time, she's the outsider, while Bates will have most of the money and endorsements. We knew Dean lived for local politics, and was dying to get back into public office, but this still surprised us.
