Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Rated PG-13 129 minutes 2011

Holmes (Robert Downey Jr., never better) and his bosom companion Dr. Watson (Jude Law, along for the ride) journey hectically to France, Germany, and Switzerland on the trail of evil genius Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) and his henchmen, who are trying to stir up World War I twenty years too early. The change of scenery does them good. Otherwise: same Victorian clutter, same overstuffed frames, same Guy Ritchie directorial hyperactivity, but with the exotic addition of Noomi Rapace (of the Swedish Dragon Tattoo movies) as a Roma fortune-teller/spy, plus the agreeable hamming of Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes, the bulkier brother. Socko production design by Sarah Greenwood. The screenplay is by the husband-wife team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney (129 min.)
