When: Sat., May 31, 8 p.m. 2008
In a spring season where SFJazz offers everything from J.S. Bach to Brazilian and Bulgarian stars in addition to jazz, the singular event is "Miles from India," on Saturday, May 31 at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater (3301 Lyon St. at Bay, San Francisco). The once-only concert features a dozen musicians from the monumental, new two-CD set, "Miles from India," that puts various combinations of the trumpet great's sidemen with Indian classical and jazz musicians. The result isn't the usual tribute, although it is that, but a springboard for fresh interactions among innovative players using Davis tunes from "All Blues" to "In a Silent Way" and "Ife." On Saturday the stage band includes the amazing psychedelic guitarist of Miles' '70s band, Pete Cosey, with bassist Ron Carter, tabla master Badal Roy, saxophonist RudreshManhathappa, violinist Kala Ramnath, former local bassist Benny Rietveld (who went on to Sheila E., Miles Davis, and now Santana), trumpeter Wallace Roney and more. 8 p.m. $25-$56.
