When: Jan. 23-Feb. 9 2014
Comedians no longer just deliver one-liners and knock-knock jokes. Now they creatively incorporate music, video, theater, and performance art into their repertoires, cultivate their legions of fans on Twitter and Instagram, and perform in front of thousands at giant music festivals. As if to further cement their status as the new rock stars, comedians also play in actual rock bands: Case in point, this year’s Sketchfest will feature performances by Tenacious D, Princess (aka Maya Rudolph’s Prince tribute band), and The Girls, the band of Alison Brie (of Community and Mad Men). And those are just a few of the highlights of the annual comedy festival, which is now in its thirteenth year. Other notable events include tributes to Alan Arkin and Key & Peele, conversations with Laura Dern and Luke Wilson, screenings of Revenge of the Nerds and Napolean Dynamite (featuring the cast members and Jon Heder, respectively, in person), and appearances by Zach Galifianakis, Jason Schwartzman, David Wain, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Eugene Mirman, and Bobcat Goldthwait, among many others. Although the comedy extravaganza expanded to Oakland two years ago, it’s unfortunately returned to being a West Bay-only affair. But for laffs this plentiful, we will definitely travel.
