SF Ethnic Dance Festival

When: Sat., June 23, 3 & 8 p.m. and Sun., June 24, 3 p.m. 2012

The diverse cultures of the East Bay do more than bring great food to the table; they also bring amazing dance to the stage. On Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, East Bay troupes make up nearly half of the roster at the 34th annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, at the Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (700 Howard St., San Francisco). Dance enthusiasts will fly in from across the country and around the world (naturally) to see our global-local companies: Oakland's Shabnam in shimmering belly dance, the Chinyakare Ensemble with a Zimbabwean harvest tale, De Rompe y Raja Cultural Association in a dynamic Afro-Peruvian zamacueca, and Walnut Creek's Te Mana O Te Ra paying homage to Tahitian goddesses. The continent-hopping show includes four more companies from around the bay in dances of Appalachia, China, Hungary, India, Mexico. Sat. 3 p.m., 8 p.m.; Sun. 3 p.m.; $18-$58. 415-978-2787 or SFEthnicDanceFestival.org
