Actor-turned-filmmaker Ethan Hawke was so impressed after meeting concert-pianist-turned-teacher Seymour Bernstein that he made this wispy-but-charming documentary profile, which shows Bernstein conducting piano master classes at his Manhattan apartment and dispensing words to live by. Has the same loquacious spirit as Louis Malle’s My Dinner with Andre, combined with the only-in-New-York lovable eccentricity of Herb & Dorothy and Bill Cunningham New York. Compared to the over-stimulation of most mass-market films, an evening with Seymour is a fresh-air break in a cool, quiet garden high above the noise of the street (84 min.).
