Rated PG-13 104 minutes 2010

At first glance, the career of Formula One race car driver Ayrton Senna would seem an unlikely subject for a documentary outside the world of TV sports. But director Asif Kapadia assembles the race and newsreel clips with an eye to the drama of Senna’s risky life and he emerges as a principled man who just happened to have the right stuff for racing in ultra-dangerous conditions – as one observer notes, the three-time world champion was “a genius in the rain.” The on-board-camera footage of Senna’s car hurtling through chicanes and sweeps at 200 mph is exhilarating in the extreme. And he comes across as the charismatic hero of ordinary Brazilians. The UK-produced doc was written by Manish Pandey. (104 min.)
