Secret Sidewalk’s Primal Dap

When: Fri., Oct. 18, 8:30 p.m. 2019

When saxophonist Marcus Stephens isn’t touring with the disco/funk combo Con Brio or blowing with the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, he can be found exploring the East Bay’s back alleys and hidden rhythmic byways with the collective Secret Sidewalk. Featuring sonic explorer Alex “Puzzle” Abalos on modular synthesizer, Mike Boo on turntables and samplers, and M-Tet’s Michael Reed on drums and electronics, the group has been conjuring a swirling mélange of hip-hop, jazz, and psychedelia since 2010. Following up on 2017’s sold-out beat tape Does Anyone Knock Anymore, Secret Sidewalk is celebrating the release of the album Primal Dap, a seductively disorienting urban soundscape built from lapidary fragments of beats and drones, fuzzy electronic textures and sinuous saxophone melodies. It’s polymorphous music for a region in the midst of unsettling seismic shifts.
