Secret Machines

When: Mon., Nov. 3, 8 p.m. 2008

New York's Secret Machines plow similar territory as bands like DappledCities and Band of Horses -- that is, sweeping, grandiose rock with huge melodies that meld to your brain. Melodramatic? A bit (see "Alone, Jealous and Stoned" off 2006's Ten Silver Drops), but the band's latest self-titled release delves a bit darker and synthier. "Now You're Gone" builds into a layered wall of sound with a buzzing guitar hook and giant beat that's at once serious and completely danceable. The band stops by the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) with the Dears on Monday, Nov. 3. 8 p.m., $22. IndependentSF.com
