If you’re an East Bay resident, you’ve likely seen scraper bikes. Usually spotted while being ridden in packs, they’re bicycles decorated with flashy foils and bright colors. In my book, they are a cultural landmark of Oakland. The Scraper Bike Team is a nonprofit organization pushing the scraper-bike movement forward by capturing the creative energy of East and West Oakland youth and training them on how to fix and customize bikes. Beyond that, the Team serves as a peer-support network for the youth who are involved, helping them with their goals in school and beyond. On Sunday, the Scraper Bike Team will be the first nonprofit to be featured at the Jack London Square Farmer’s Market community tent program. Stop by the stand to learn more about the youth engagement and empowerment work the Scraper Bike Team does and lookout for the flashy bikes.
Sunday March 25, 9am to 2pm, Free, 472 Water St, Oakland, CA, facebook.com/ScraperBikeTeam
