Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill over the weekend that requires California to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and treat them exactly like heterosexual marriages. The legislation, which was opposed strongly by the anti-gay-marriage contingent, means that when gay and lesbian couples get married in other states, their marriages also are valid in California when they move here — even though gay marriage is technically illegal in the Golden State.
