Savoy Family Band

When: Sun., Dec. 2, 8:30 p.m. and Sat., Jan. 17, 9 p.m. 2009

In only its second Bay Area visit from its Louisiana home, the Savoy Family Band performs classic Cajun music in three different Berkeley settings this week. Considered the first family of Cajun music (accordionist Marc, his wife, guitarist and singer Ann Savoy, and their grown sons Joel and Wilson on fiddles and keyboards), the Savoy Family has just recorded its second CD, Turn Loose But Don't Let Go, of mostly traditional, but even more rootsy than usual music for El Cerrito's Arhoolie label, which issued the groundbreaking Savoy-Doucet albums. The Family performs Thursday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. in a sit-down concert at the Freight ($18.50, $19.50), does a free in-store show at the new Down Home Music (1809 Fourth St., Berkeley) on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m., and that night at 8:30 p.m. plays for the dance crowd at Ashkenaz ($15, $18).
