Rated R 130 minutes 2012

Oliver Stone returns to his pulp beginnings (The Hand, Salvador) in a lusty mood with this down-and-dirty actioner about two Laguna Beach weed dealers (Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch), their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively), the local Mexican crime lord (Benicio Del Toro), the vicious head of the Baja drug cartel (Salma Hayek, hyperventilating), a bent DEA agent (John Travolta), and assorted plug-uglies squabbling over turf near the surf. Director Stone leaves no sucking chest wound unturned in giving Don Winslow’s novel of the same name – adapted by screenwriter Shane Salerno, the novelist, and the director – the custom drive-by ultra-violent treatment, despite some of the dumbest dialogue since the invention of sinsemilla. It’s a quality rebound from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Also with Demián Bichir and Emile Hirsch (127 min.)
