Sandra Gilbert

When: Thu., Jan. 26, 7 p.m. 2012

Anyone who's ever read Joan Didion or Joyce Carol Oates can attest to the dehiscent, visceral creative velocity of grief. Add to that list of brilliant sufferers the poet and Berkeley resident Sandra Gilbert, whose latest poetry collection, Aftermath, contends beautifully with loss as well as "the complex experiences of endurance, acquiescence, and rebirth that, with luck, mark the aftermath of sorrow." She reads at Diesel (5433 College Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, Jan. 26. 7 p.m., free.
