When: June 24-July 1 2009
With San Francisco Opera's spring/summer season in full swing, people are clamoring for tickets for this week's productions of Porgy and Bess and La Traviata. (I haven't seen Tosca yet, but other critics don't seem to be jumping off the parapet with enthusiasm for the production). This is grand opera at its grandest, with casts headed by the glamorous Anna Netrebko in Traviata and Eric Owens in Porgy. I'm especially enthused about the second cast for Traviata (June 29 and July 2), when Adler Fellow tenor David Lomelí will likely demonstrate his full Pavarotti-of-tomorrow potential. At the War Memorial Opera House (301 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco). $20-$290, standing room $10. http://www.SFOpera.com or 415-864-3330.
