Founded in 1978 to celebrate the Bay Area's bounty of cultural dance, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival draws performers (and viewers) from across Northern California and around the globe. The festival moves to Berkeley for its 33rd year, where for the first time ever, the public is invited to watch the auditions. Over two weekends at Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Ave. at Dana St., Berkeley), dozens of Northern California companies and soloists will show off their best, from Egyptian belly dance and Korean drum rhythms to a Yup'ik Eskimo piece and a Congolese mask dance. With 35 performances each day, the festival offers a world of movement and music right here in the EastBay. Saturday, Jan. 8, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 9 and 16, 10 a.m.-7 pm. $10, free for children 12 and under. 415-474-3914 or WorldArtsWest.org
