Experimental & Avant-Garde

San Francisco Electronic Music Festival

When: Sept. 10-13, 7 & 8 p.m. 2015

Now in its sixteenth year, the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival continues to feature artists who probe the margins of sound and hone original approaches to technology and composition that might later infect the mainstream. The lineup for this year’s festival — which occurs between Thursday and Sunday at the Brava Theater (2781 24th St., San Francisco) and the Exploratorium’s Kanbar Forum (Pier 15, The Embarcadero) — includes Chicago sound artist Olivia Block, whose solo performances involve voicing objects and improvisation with electronics; Alessandro Cortini, international synth guru whose recent album, Risveglio, is a dark, interior summer hit with the critics; and Charles Cohen and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, who both work with a Buchla Music Easel, a lesser-known but mightily expressive piece of hardware by the storied Bay Area engineer.
