Rated PG-13 102 minutes 2012

Balinese dancers, a volcano, ruins of various civilizations, masses of humanity doing everything from manufacturing to factory farming to prison chorus lines. Filmmaker Ron Fricke’s visual bath is solidly in the Koyaanisqatsi mode – no real surprises here, except that the image-making technology has improved a lot since Godfrey Reggio’s indefatigable 1982 small-world doc. Presented in Panavision Super 70, Samsara demands viewing on the largest possible screen. Conclusions: 1) Belief systems are many and varied; 2) The Earth is overpopulated; 3) Life is not fair, but then it is. Directed, photographed, co-written, and co-edited by Fricke, who performed similar tasks on Reggio’s original. (99 min.)
