Salvation Boulevard

Rated R 96 minutes 2011

It breaks down in the last act, but along the way Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, and the rest of director George Ratliff’s lively cast have a devilishly good time making sport of the gullibility of evangelical Christians. To explain the predicament of ex-Deadhead, now born-again Christian Carl Vanderveer (Kinnear) would spoil the plot, but it involves mayhem and excessive credulity in and around the flock of hustler-preacher Dan Day (Brosnan), with major input by Jennifer Connelly as Carl’s true-believer wife, Ed Harris an atheist professor, and Melissa Tomei as a stoner security guard. Travels much the same satirical road as Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a little more broadly but with equal comic energy. Doug Max Stone and Ratliff adapted the screenplay from Larry (Wag the Dog) Beinhart’s novel (95 min.)
