Run for the Roses Hat Contest

When: Sat., May 1, 11:45 a.m. 2010

The biggest day in horse racing demands the biggest day in hats. Golden Gate Fields (1100 Eastshore Highway, Berkeley) ties in to this year's Kentucky Derby by hosting its second annual Run for the Roses Hat Contest on Saturday, May 1. To go along with the whole derby thing, the EastBay track will award prizes to attendees sporting the most glamorous, outrageous, and thematically appropriate chapeaux. The other lure, of course, is the running of the nation's premier race for three-year-olds. It's been over a quarter-century since Kentucky launched a Triple Crown winner, but you can bet on that possibility at the track on Saturday. And if you can't pick a winner, at least you may be able to miss seeing your money drift away by being blocked from the action by an enormous hat. 11:45 a.m., $4. 510-559-7333
