At the very least, The Ruins deserves some credit for originality. Rather than derive its creep factor from familiar beasties, novelist Scott B. Smithâs screenplay of his own book turns the vines covering a Mayan pyramid into a botanical nightmare. Before long, two couples of silly turistas , plus a German looking for his missing brother, are making us squirm by performing crude -â and awesomely gruesome â- surgery on themselves. Itâs not all that scary, and director Carter Smith has obviously never studied Hitchcockâs use of suspense, but like Eli Rothâs debut, Cabin Fever, this film should adequately gross you out (90 min.).
