Rudo y Cursi

Rated R 90 minutes 2009

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, the Y Tu Mamá También boys, portray a pair of back-country Mexican brothers catapulted from a banana plantation to the big-time soccer fútbol life in Mexico City, in Carlos Cuarón’s winning comic character study, which does double duty as a fierce social satire of rampant mercantilism. Writer-director Cuarón (brother of Alfonso Cuarón, who produced along with fellow filmmakers Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro) stocks the film with broad, lusty characters — García and Luna at their crudest — and lowbrow laffs, but his intentions are hard as a diamond (103 min.).
