Ruby Sparks

Rated R 104 minutes 2012

A rich young Los Angeles novelist named Calvin (Paul Dano), already past his prime and facing writer’s block, conjures up the perfect girlfriend: the title character, played by actress Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the screenplay. That is, Ruby is a fictional character come to life, one that the novelist can change at will by rewriting her lines in the manuscript. Naturally this spells trouble for Calvin, but even bigger problems for the screenwriters and the directors, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine). Despite the spirited play-acting of Dano and Kazan and the film’s entertaining palette of humorous local color and personalities (Steve Coogan, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, et al.), the fanciful sitcom of the creative process comes across more as a juvenile “artists and models” sex fantasy. Tales like this should be thornier, tougher, harder to forget about, and less self-congratulatory (104 min.)
