Ruben Llamas and Jorge Gabriel Martinez

When: Thu., April 25, 5:30-7:30 p.m. 2013

During wartime in the 1940s, Oakland was, like many places in the United States, in a state of flux: A new population of laborers had migrated to the city to work the railways and shipyards at the port, rapidly transforming the neighborhood surrounding the area into a dense multicultural hub. Join Ruben Llamas on Thursday, Apr. 25, at the UC Berkeley Ethnic Studies Library (30 Stephens Hall) as he reads from his memoir, Eye From the Edge: A Memoir of West Oakland, California, about growing up Latino in West Oakland during the Forties and Fifties. Llamas will be joined by singer and guitarist Jorge Gabriel Martinez, who will provide live musical accompaniment featuring songs from the era. 5:30-7:30 p.m., free. 510-643-1234 or
